Wyndham’s was built for the prominent actor-manager Charles Wyndham in 1899. He had managed the Criterion theatre for 20 years and had long dreamt of owning his own theatre. But he had been unable to raise the necessary funds alone, so his leading lady and future wife, Mary Moore, provided the essential help in securing investment from her influential acquaintances. The splendid, classically designed theatre flourished, and soon after another theatre, the Albery was built on the other half of the site, cementing Wyndham’s significant place in British theatre.

The exquisitely decorated Louis XVI style auditorium is of eggshell blue, cream and gilt. A crystal chandelier is suspended below a marvellous ceiling centrepiece of Boucher-inspired painted cherubs and angels. The building is physically linked to the Albery, by an enclosed overheard walkway at the rear.Wyndham’s has held some talked-about events in recent times, such as Yasmina Reza’s comment on the art world, Art (1999), and Madonna’s West End stage debut in Up For Grabs (2002).
