A fringe theatre in Kilburn, the Tricycle has carved itself an enviable niche in London ’s theatre scene, despite being located in a north-west corner of London . It is renowned for programming daring works, which challenge accepted ideals. In particular, it strives to reflect the ethnic diversity of the neighbourhood.

A relatively new theatre, it was founded in 1980 with the help of Brent Council and housed in an adapted Foresters’ Hall. Unluckily, during a run of a play called Burning Point, it was destroyed in a blaze that started in the adjacent timber yard. Although a disaster, the upside of the tragedy was that the Tricycle rose from the ashes a much enhanced artistic space. An expanded foyer and improved facilities were followed by a multi-million pound cinema in 1998, an art gallery and studios. The Tricycle has been the starting point for many acclaimed works; from Pinter premieres to numerous Broadway transfers, and continues to draw audiences from right across London .
