At one time a brewery, the Donmar Warehouse reflects in its name the fact it was once a warehouse, used for ripening bananas. As for its first name, ‘Don’ derives from Donald Albery of the theatrical dynasty (whose grandmother was married to Charles Wyndham) and ‘Mar’ from his friend, the ballerina Margot Fonteyn. In the heart of Covent Garden, the red brick venue is an intimate off-West End theatre with just 244 seats. It has always enjoyed a reputation for innovative programming and a fresh approach, having staged many critically acclaimed productions.

It is a relatively young theatre; it began its artistic reincarnation in 1961 when Donald Albery acquired it for use as a rehearsal space for the London Festival Ballet. From 1977 to 1981 it was the Royal Shakespeare Company’s London home. It flourished under the leadership of Ian Albery and Nica Burns during the 1980s and after they relinquished control Sam Mendes took over. He oversaw a major redevelopment before departing for Hollywood. Today, the theatre continues to follow its tradition of showing strong and diverse productions.
