The Review - THEATRE by JOSH LOEB

In the Wings

A MURDER mystery by acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard will return to its Islington roots next month.
Artist Descending a Staircase, which was first performed at the King’s Head on Upper Street, is about three artists who live and work together for six decades until, one day, one of them is found dead at the bottom of a staircase. The play will run at the Old Red Lion in Angel from December 1-31. Tickets are £15.50 (£13.50 concs). Call 08444 771 000.

ON the subject of murder, word reaches me that Brian Daniels, artistic director of Hampstead’s New End Theatre, is penning a play of his own – about Richard McCann, the son of the first victim of the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe.
Daniels, who is from Leeds, was inspired to bring the story to the stage after reading Mr McCann’s book. The pair are working on the final version, which is due to premier in Yorkshire next year.

“UNBRIDLED terror” is in the offing at Kentish Town’s Lion and Unicorn Theatre, where Supernatural, a new play, is being performed this week.
It promises to be “a journey into the heart of darkness”, transplanting horror stories of English folklore into a modern setting. The show completes its first run at the theatre on Saturday (November 28) and will be staged again from December 5-January 10. Tickets are priced £12 (£10 concs); call the Lion and Unicorn Theatre’s box office on 020 7284 0766. Also look out for the hard-hitting version of Dickens’s classic tale Oliver Twist, opening at the Lion and Unicorn on November 30.

CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of our National Theatre competition.
The lucky five – Sheila Davies, Desi Berman, Neil Broomes, Julia Rank and Adam Merchant – each get a pair of tickets to see Nation, which is based on the novel by award-winning author Terry Pratchett.
