In the Wings -

• A centipede will give Darwinism a leg up next month to mark the great man’s bicentenary. Gilbert is Dead, a tragicomic take on evolution featuring a puppet version of the many-legged minibeast, is at the Hoxton Hall, 130 Hoxton Street, N1 from November 4-29.

• A CLOSE cousin is Origin of the Species, which tells the story of a Neanderthal woman brought back to life after being exhumed by an archaeologist.
It runs from October 27-November 21 at the Arcola Theatre, Arcola Street, E8.

• IS Darwin more overexposed than Cheryl Cole?
The British Museum is getting in on the act with a play with the somewhat unlikely title Darwin and the Greeks. It will be performed on November 6 at 6:30pm. Tickets are £5, £3 concessions.

• EVOLUTION isn’t needed at Upstairs at the Gatehouse, which remains one of the best above-a-pub theatres around. It’s continuing to do what it does best – staging rip-roaring musicals. Great Pretenders – about party of rock star impersonators auditioning for a West End show – is its latest offering, running until November 15. Watch this space for a review.

• CELEBRITY impersonators? Fans of Barbra Streisand, prepare to be amazed! Steven Brinberg, who has been travelling the globe for years with his tribute show Simply Barbra pitches at the New Players Theatre in Villiers Street, WC2N on November 24 and 25. Apparently he looks just like her.

• ALSO next month: two plays about two different parts of the Emerald Isle:
