WITH debt becoming a reality for an increasing number of people, Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary makes a timely return to the public eye at Highgate’s Upstairs at the Gatehouse.
Written in 1857, it is considered one of the greatest novels ever.
Doctor Charles Bovary falls for the decadent and spendthrift Emma following the death of his first wife.
Emma’s habits lead to heavy debts, but it is soon apparent these will be the least of Bovary’s worries.
New musical The Bovary Tale, described by director and librettist Laura Steel as a tale of “adultery, debt and suicide”, careers through the epic plot at breakneck speed.
