THE poet Dannie Abse is to return to the ­Pentameters Theatre in an event marking the Hampstead playhouse’s 40th anniversary. The Welsh poet, the younger brother of the politician Leo Abse, was the first to appear at Pentameters after the theatre opened in 1968. MIDSUMMER Night’s Dream meets Gosford Park in a new play at the King’s Head ­Theatre, Upper Street. Adapted from JM ­Barrie’s Dear Brutus, Shadowmaster takes the audience into an eerie wood where sexual longings and hilarious hypocrisies are exposed.The show runs from July 29 until September 7.

INTERNATIONAL legend Elaine Stritch returns to the Shaw Theatre after a ­sensational run on Broadway. Her musical comedy traces Stritch’s career including roles in The Little Foxes, Bus Stop, A Delicate Balance, Sail Away and Who’s Afraid of
Virginia Woolf?
The show received a Tony Award in 2002 and a string of awards for best solo performances.

A play written in verse focusing on the mayoral race in France comes to the King’s Head theatre on ­Saturday night. Up the Republic, which takes a post-Sarkozy France, starts at 9.15pm.
