PREVIEW: WE HAPPY FEW

HAMPSTEAD PARISH CHURCH

THE Osiris Players were an all-female troupe that toured the length and breadth of Britain during the Second World War in an old Rolls Royce, delivering Shakespeare and other classics to the culture-starved natives.
Their’s is a true story of spirit overcoming limited resources – something which the Hampstead Players, who have been performing great works on a shoestring for the last 31 years, know all about.
Their latest offering, which starts next Thursday July 10 at the Hampstead Parish Church in Church Row, is We Happy Few, Imogen Stubbs’ fond tribute to the Osiris company.
The players, who will donate a share of profits to the church, created the set by donating their old suitcases and rummaging through charity shops.
Unfortunately no vintage Rolls Royce turned up in their Oxfam searches, but the open air backdrop of the beautiful parish church will be quite sufficient.
The play is also the swansong for director Matthew Stevens. He has been selected for the ultra-exclusive Drama Studio London – one of only three admitted this year.
