The Review - THEATRE
Published: 1 May 2008

In the wings

THOSE first tentative forays into carnal knowledge get the sensitive treatment in Fucked, the debut from writer Penelope Skinner. Skinner’s nostalgic depiction of the journey from adolescence to womanhood has received rave reviews across the board but be quick: the show is only on until May 3 at the Old Red Lion in Angel.

THE battle of the sexes reaches fever pitch in David Mamet’s Oleanna at the Theatro Technis from next Tuesday. During its New York run, audience members came to blows leaving the theatre, opinions were so divided over the story of the disintegrating relationship of a young student and her university tutor. Those looking for further beef are invited to attend the Q&A with cast and director after the show on Thursday May 8.

CHEKHOV displays a hitherto unseen raunchy side in his farces and short stories. Act Provocateur promises a cheekier edge to the turn of the century playwright at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre in Kentish Town next week with a review of his early works.

SERIAL killers and beat poets in the same theatre spell a double dose of black comedy for those venturing up to Pentameters. A killer motivated by jealousy strikes in Killing Time, with Jackie Skarvellis, while Caravanserai produce the Skunk Smokers of Herman, Nebraska by Mark James Olsen about a beat poet and his therapist, from May 7-9.
