An excellent revival of Pan
PETER PAN
King’s Head
LEONARD Bernstein’s adaptation of JM Barrie’s dark tale falls a little short of expectation.
Written in 1950, it was one of the Broadway musical genius’s earliest musical theatre pieces.
But despite some haunting moments, in Wendy’s wistful Peter Peter, the songs seemed to disrupt rather than add to the night.
Charm and humour are abundant in Stephanie Sinclaire’s production.
More than 20 actors share the small stage – and their performances dragged what bordered on a disaster out of the mire.
Peter Land doubles as Hook and a particularly despicable Mr Darling, who wants to take Peter’s shadow to Sotheby’s to be valued, and comes off best in a truncated version that never quite takes flight.
It was strange not to see Land’s Captain Hook give his dying yet defiant public-school cry of “floreat Etona!” as he plunges into the mouth of the crocodile that lurks and ticks at the back of the stage.
Katherine Kastin is a fine Peter. She smiled and pouted, stilted walk and gangling manner, her pouts and slight sense of insecurity and her pointy ears.
Lisa Holliman plays an excellent Wendy.
My son, used as he is to blood and gore, was strangely scared of some of the X-rated effects. But he’ll get over it. This is an excellent revival of Peter Pan that gives them plenty to wonder at.
