CHRISTMAS isn’t all it seems in Chicago. It’s December 24 and the holidays have arrived, but not everyone is listening for sleigh bells.
The wierdos are out in force and they all have one thing in common – their choice of cab.
One tired driver on his last shift of the year and an eclectic mix of strangers, Hellcab offers an interesting glimpse into each of their lives, as we ride with him through the bustling city.
Rooted in his own experience as an ex-cabbie, writer Will Kern takes us on a simulated journey through a cross section of humanity, offering an incredibly authentic and honest narrative. Originally opening in 1992, the play first ran in Chicago for over nine years, before moving to New York and then LA, and eventually transporting to London.
This performance, by director Jono Gadsby, marks its British debut, and it was certainly worth the wait.
With a strong cast, including an excellent lead in Paul Constantine, the audience is engaged with an exceptional intensity.
Just as diverse as the people we meet, the emotions we are exposed to throughout are entirely varied, swinging from sadness to joy and surprise to fear and this ensures a thoughtful performance.
For all those in favour of an ‘alternative’ Christmas show, Hellcab may be just up your street.
