The Review - THEATRE by DAN CARRIER
Published: 14 December 2006

Snowman’s classic tale will enthral youngsters

MUSICAL - THE SNOWMAN
Peacock Theatre

THE Raymond Briggs book has enchanted children for many years, and this quality dance interpretation of his story about a little boy and his snowman will win it a new set of admirers.
The Peacock Theatre is part of the Sadler’s Wells group and their high production values shine through.
The dancing is incredible – the cast’s pirouttes and leaps in the Snowman costumes had the young audience gasping and squealing.
The super outfits and stage design mean even if the youngsters attention begins to flag, another skipping animal leaps on stage and wins them back.
The story itself is easily followed. My boy, nearly three, could tell me afterwards what had happened.
There is even a lesson hidden in the ending. After the Snowman melts away, more snow falls and the cycle of life starts again.
The only downside is the score. Although the orchestra are great, I can’t help but associate the theme, Walking In The Air, with being stuck in a busy lift trying to finish off my Christmas shopping.
But if you can put such thoughts to one side, this is a lovely Christmas treat, beautifully played, wonderfully produced with moments of real charm.
