Momix: Lunar Sea

THE fact that the MOMIX dance company take their name from a brand of cattle feed should alert you to the strangeness of their productions early on.
They have elements of dance, gymnastics, sculpture and video art, but the overall effect is something quite indefinable.
In Lunar Sea, 10 performers in glowing UV suits move mysteriously around the stage; scuttling like crabs one minute and flying like birds the next.
Images are projected onto a giant transparent mesh in front of them, shifting from moonscapes to flowers to enormous womb-like structures. Ambient psychedelic music fills the theatre.
In another section, dancers using just umbrellas and sheets create sensual, shimmering alien wraiths.
The whole effect is ethereal, dream-like, and just a tad gimmicky.
The black and ultra-violet lighting is undeniably beautiful, but its interest pales quickly, like the Day-glo artwork in a hippy’s bedroom.
There is no question that choreographer Moses Pendleton has broken some rules with his production. Whether they are rules which should be broken is a matter of opinion. |
