Germans take jokes seriously

COMEDY: Four World Cups and One World Pope!
New End theatre

A GREAT man once told me that German comedy is no laughing matter.
Indeed our Teutonic cousins take their humour very seriously.
Four World Cups and One World Pope is a bizarre and enlightening stroll through the Deutsche psyche, as seen through the eyes of Henning Wehn and Otto Kuhnle.
The comedy is everything Germans love, with gags, magic tricks, singing and dancing all mixed up.
Wehn supplies the stand-up while accomplished television entertainer Kuhnle takes on cabaret, including gnome-throwing, accordion-playing and broom-juggling.
Meanwhile, Wehn, the man who looks like Manuel Noriega and now calls Tooting home – and has the saaaf London inflections to match – is apparently so efficient that he uses the same punchline twice.
The pair’s routines are punctuated by bickering in German: “We do what the English do when they are abroad – just speak in their own language.”
All the usual gags are there – the war, David Hasselhoff, punctuality, football and, of course, the German work ethic.
As Wehn, the self-styled German Comedy Ambassador, says: “The only thing we Germans hate more than peace is inaccuracy.”
Despite some awful punchlines and occasional crassness, everything is said with love and gentle good humour.
This post-Edinburgh variety show is an utterly original feelgood experience and could do wonders for Anglo-German understanding – and Wehn and Kuhnle will even have a pint with you afterwards.
