Gangster story with poetic side

2GRAVES
Arts Theatre

A BLOODY tale of murder, revenge and retribution from Chalk Farm writer Paul Sellar heads the bill at the launch of a recently refurbished West End Theatre following a sell-out run in Edinburgh.
Not many people would try to blend the modern gangster yarn with poetry but that is what Sellar has done.
Having grown up around gangster culture in London’s East End, conversely, Sellar became interested by romantic poets including Browning, Keats and Byron.
Bobby Topps is riding on the crest of a wave, poised to take the crown at the 1978 World Professional Darts. Only now he’s dead. His son, Jack, sets out to avenge those whom he believes are responsible for his father’s downfall. He turns from adoring son to hard-bitten criminal, condemned to forever re-live his own cruel violence.
The Oscar-nominated composer Michael Nyman loved it so much in Edinburgh he is now writing original music for the London production.
Sellar rose to prominence with his first play The Bedsit, which quickly transferred from London (BAC) to the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh. 2Graves is Sellars’ long awaited follow up.
He said: “Although 2Graves is entirely fictional I do have some knowledge of it’s milieu as my family (on my father’s side) originates from London’s East End and many of these characters are in some way known to me. I recently heard that a member of my family owned a betting shop in the East End.
It was run by Alf Sellar – or “Honest Alf” as he was known. I suppose that’s part of the background of the play. Even if I didn’t know it at the time.”
