THE BARBER OF SEVILLE
Lion and unicorn
THE original version of Beaumarchais‚ Barber of Seville was first performed in 1775, in Paris at the Comédie Française at the Tuileries Palace.
Revived at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre by the Act Provocateur International Company, it remains a fun and vibrant work.
Slapstick, love, scheming, jealousy and a lot of frolicking on stage all make for an entertaining evening.
The young lovers Count Almaviva (Jamie Richards) and Rosina (Emily Sidonie) bounce off each other on stage.
The whole cast seem to be having fun with the production and this rubs off on the audience.
“I try to use my face as a mask to make Bartholo as cartoonish as possible,” says Dan Horrigan who is Doctor Bartholo, the villain of the play.
Physical comedy works ideally in a small and intimate theatre where the audience are invited to share in Figaro’s scheming and Rosina’s agonies.
This is young director Scarlett Comnas’s second play. She is only 18, but she brings the piece together with intuition and a light touch.
