Murder tale rich in drama

THEATRE - MEET ME IN THE WOODS
The Old Red Lion

MEET Me in the Woods is a modern murder mystery tale packed with enough drama to keep even the most exacting fans of the genre happy.
Explosively dysfunctional, the Bruton family have an outward veneer of success that hides dark secrets.
Julia (played by Pearl Marsland) is a former film actress who can barely mask her scorn for daughter Katherine (Sinéad O’Keeffe).
Shambolic Gregory Bruton, (Peter Andrew) her husband, is a fallen tennis hotshot who has been all too aware of his wife’s affairs, even that with their adopted son, Charles (Matthew Rowland-Roberts).
But Charles is now dead, murdered it appears, by Katherine’s best friend Charmian (Diana Walker) who was consequently incarcerated.
Katherine was left so distraught she cannot even recall the murder, although she was present, and is subject to fits of panic.
Julia now plots Charmain’s murder, in revenge for the killing of her adopted son and lover Charles.
A gift of a part for an actor, Julia’s domineering and flamboyant person steals the stage.
We pity the plain Katherine as her mother delightedly rips into her, revealing how she only gets work as an actor when her mother pulls the strings.
But the tables turn in the second half when Charmain sashays in and throws Julia with her self-confidence.
Slowly Julia’s alcoholism and instability become more apparent, as the story navigates through some hefty plot twists.
On occasion you feel that playwright DD Thomas may have taken a twist too many.
But smart directing from Rose Lewenstein keeps the performance credible.
An entertaining production.
