A feast of festive fun

A LOVE song to all things Hackney, the Spice Festival gathers together the best acts and hottest new talent for two weeks of music, laughter and much more every summer.
Luckily for all of us, this smorgasbord of east London promise begins this Saturday with the Guilty Pleasures Roller Disco – an interactive night that does exactly what it says on the tin – before spreading out around venues in Hackney for the remainder of the fortnight.
The high jinks continue with everyone’s favourite pub landlord Al Murray, political agit-comic Mark Thomas, a poetry Olympics, cabaret acts, and a day dedicated to games from all over the world which the public are invited to play.
The weird and wonderful world of Barnaby Brown: Orphan Extraordinaire (pictured) also previews at the festival before it makes its way to the Edinburgh Fringe next month.
Actor Steven Berkoff performs an On The Waterfront workshop, and there is music from klezma-crazies Beskydy, Dirty Pretty Things, The Blue Bambinos and jazz vocalist Faye Patton.
In fact, it is foolish to even attempt listing all the shows taking part. To give the reader an impression of the size and variety of the proceedings, suffice to say there are six different types of roller disco alone.
So get your skates on.
