Brave and broad look at the human psyche

IT'S often difficult to sum up a play which takes on large chunks of Freudian theory and the sexual, psychological and behavioural dynamics that permeate modern society.
It’s also apparently quite difficult to pull off such a broad exploration of the human psyche in the space of 80 semi-improvisational minutes – unless, of course, you happen to be Ingmar Bergman (and neither of this play’s directors are).
That said, Permission is thankfully shot through with enough twisted humour – most of it clever and in good taste – to avoid completely overloading the theatrical circuits.
Plays like this can sometimes seem over-cooked, either taking themselves too seriously or lacking the basic intelligence to back up all the flailing dramatic posturing.
Directors Toni Broughton and Martin Bishop just about manage to dodge that particular bullet and deliver a production that, on balance, proved entertaining.
The loose nature of the production at times makes it difficult to figure out whether the glitches in performance are the result of quirky direction, an improvisational stammer or simply a fluffed line.
However, the performances of Charlie Meyrick and Dan Horrigan could hardly be faulted.
Something of a mixed bag then, with several thought-provoking and enjoyable set-pieces wedged between a few questionable fillers.
As fringe theatre companies go, however, Drs and Nurses are definitely one to watch in terms of their potential for future growth and innovations.
