The Review - THEATRE by SHARON GARFINKEL

Fine production of Pinter classic

THE CARETAKER

Tricycle Theatre

Harold Pinter’s corker of a play is being given a marvellous revival by Jamie Lloyd.
This production first seen at Sheffield Crucible last year, boasts a well-known and all-star cast – Nigel Harman, Con O’Neill and David Bradley – and is funny and frightening in equal measure.
Written in 1959 and first performed in 1960, the story is a masterpiece in portraying the unsettling games people play with each other.
David Bradley, who many will know as the caretaker of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, now plays Davies, an-altogether different caretaker – a homeless tramp who finds himself in the junkshop of a bed-sitter of two brothers (designer Soutra Gilmour deserves full marks for marvellously exploiting every nook and cranny of the Tricycle stage).
There is the younger brother – thuggish manipulative and menacing Mick (Nigel Harman – remember Dennis from EastEnders?) and dim-witted Aston (Con O’Neill) who was subjected to shock therapy in a mental institution.
What develops is a power-game between the three men all vying for their territory.
Although this play has been performed in every theatrical capital in the world, it is this outstanding production with its brilliant and confident cast which will stay in one’s mind long after one has left the Kilburn theatre.
