Monologues on composers’ demise

CLASSICAL ASSASSINS
Red Hedgehog

WEAVING broad historical fact with the speculative minutiae of everyday fiction, Jonathan Lennie's Classical Assassins consists of five monologues delivered by those individuals either directly or indirectly involved in the deaths of some of the world's greatest composers.
Poignant, funny and always engaging, the script is brilliantly performed. Each of the players powerfully evokes a sense of time and place (not an easy thing to do with a monologue and a simple stage), with moving performances by Jenny Harold and Carl Prekopp deserving particular mention.
Musical purists may raise concerns over the blurring of fact and fiction in dramatising the demise of such historically important figures, but these concerns are quickly put to rest by the quality of the play.
The depth and conviction of the script suggests a respect and empathy between playwright and subject, while the astute social commentary that underlines the monologues creates a separate but relevant sense of the troubled, unhappy worlds the narrators inhabit. It doesn't really matter that these may not be precise versions of how and why the composers died.
What this play constructs is a palpable atmosphere of what it could have been like in those final days, and the audience is therefore left with a greater appreciation of the artists, their work and the great loss that their deaths represent.
