The Review - THEATRE by EMILY DUGAN

Jump will have you ‘kids’ acting out the right moves

JUMP
The Peacock

You might not have sat down and thought about what would happen if you crossed a Jackie Chan film with an episode of neighbours, but I have a feeling it would look something like this.
The characters are simple, but well considered to create great physical comedy. And who needs plot when you’ve got people breaking planks on their heads?
There’s the son-in-law who takes his glasses off and transforms from a simpering love-shy geek into a sexy assassin. A drunken uncle, who somehow manages to convey inebriation while performing gymnastic moves so complex they’d make the Russian Olympic squad look like a troop of paraplegics.
And then there’s the inept robbing duo who somehow manage not to get killed by this high-kicking family.
The groups of school kids sitting behind us could barely control themselves, exclaiming at each flip and chop in awed whispers, “that is sooo cool,” and finally, the ultimate accolade: “This is better than the cinema.”
It’s a shame that British mime comedy has never got much past Mr Bean. These guys can raise raucous laughter while pulling off the kind of moves you thought were only possible by mashing the controller on a game of Streetfighter.
In fact they execute every move with such composure and ease that at times they appear to have the power to press pause mid-flight.
And even this is a source of comedy later in the show, when they do a Matrix pastiche by holding each other in mid-air to perform impossible kicks and gravity defying stunts in frozen time.
In fact, there was only one moment I wished I wasn’t in the theatre, but then there’s nothing like audience participation to make the best of us develop a sudden interested in the toes of our shoes. But even this was genuinely funny and mercifully brief.
I just feel sorry for all the A&E departments across London, as every kid and big kid returns home to attempt a triple backflip-double-somersault-splits over the sofa.
