The Review - MOVIES with KAREN KRIZANOVICH

Pierce Bonds with Greg

THE MATADOR Directed by Richard Shepard
Certificate 15

Just when you thought you were sick and tired of Pierce Brosnan’s good looks, his problems with not getting the role of James Bond and the fact that he doesn’t really disappear into his roles comes an absolutely brilliant black comedy that is all the better for its immaculate cast.
Brosnan plays a hitman – amoral, a lover of drink and women. In fact, his rendition of character Julian Noble is almost a sideways look at James Bond himself or perhaps James Bond’s awkward older brother. Finding himself in Mexico City on one job, he realizes it is his birthday and that, despite a black book full of numbers, that he has no friends. Having spoken earlier that evening to Danny Wright, a traveling IT salesman of sorts (beautifully played by Greg Kinnear pictured here with Brosnan), Noble hits on him to be his friend for the night.
The uptight Wright, dubious at first, is soon drawn into a friendship born of machismo and fun more than anything else and when Wright starts to talk about his wife (Hope Davis), things seem better than ever for Noble, who sees in Wright the stable friend he never had and the stable, married man he could never be.
