Babes on Form: Keisha, Heidi and Amelle still know how to provide a fun-filled evening

Babes keep rolling out the pop classics

REVIEW - SUGABABES
Hammersmith Apollo By KATE SOLE

IF 2006 is being hailed as the comeback year for pop bands of old, then it should also be recognised as the year the Sugababes sealed their position as one of the most

enduring.
With only one original band member left, and many column inches dedicated to gossip about imminent splits it may have been easy to predict Mutya’s decision to leave last December would be the final chapter in the Sugababes story.
But last Tuesday at Hammersmith Apollo Keisha, Heidi and new member Amelle Berrabah rounded off their UK tour with a polished pop performance against a disco glam-esque two-tier stage.
They have a universal appeal that the boy bands before them could only dream of – tweens accompanied by parents, 20-something girls and groups of full-grown men with pints in tow who all shook their thangs.
The girls popped out their signature silhouette shapes to funky new tunes from current album Taller In More Ways, slowed it down with an acoustic version of Shape Of Your Heart and worked their microphone stands to classic hits Round Round and Push The Button.
The Sugababes do up-beat dancefloor-filling pop best and perhaps the only thing that let the show down were the soppy ballads “for the couples in the audience”.
I have no doubt the girls will continue to top the charts. But just in case another reshuffle is on the cards, I’m going to keep practising my microphone handling and poses.
Support from urbanite street-pop act Shawn Emmanuel, who hails from Notting Hill Gate, was a bonus to a fun-packed night.
