Mums Caroline Michie, Celia Grace, Eve Rogans and Caroline Emlyn-Jones sample the food at Eleanor Palmer School in Kentish Town
Parents get a taste of latest school dinners

Mums and Dads are impressed with new food firm

PARENTS are being sent back to school this week to test new school dinners.
School catering firm Caterlink replaced Scolarest last week and have promised to cook lunches using fresh ingredients at all times.
And now they have asked parents to come and sample their menus to show they are sticking to their word.
The company won the contract to provide school dinners from the Town Hall in January after scores of schools ditched previous supplier Scolarest, who were criticised for serving processed food.
At a tasting session at Eleanor Palmer school in Lupton Street, Kentish Town on Thursday, parents were invited to try a sample Caterlink menu which included turkey, leek and cheese pie, root vegetable and white bean stew, lamb koftas and fresh broccoli.
Many of the parents quizzed by the New Journal afterwards said they were impressed with the quality of the food.
Mish Frederikse, who took her daughter off school dinners last year because they were “monochromatic and too salty” said: “You can see and taste the difference in this food. The broccoli has a crunch to it. I’m definitely going to put my children back on to it.” Mum Eve Rogans added she would let her children eat the food. She said: “I loved it. It’s like home cooking. My children haven’t had school dinners for years and they are bored stiff of their packed lunches.”
Naomi Sesay, who said her son Dante, 6, started asking for packed lunches last year said: “They are much better. I like the fact that the vegetables aren’t overcooked – the broccoli is the right colour.”
Joe Read, 11, who finished two bowls of pear and red fruit crumble, said the food “was dull and drab before – now it has so much flavour.”
School head teacher Kate Frood, who confessed that eating the school dinners before had felt a little like an ordeal, said the new food was “infinitely better – it’s obviously cooked with fresh ingredients”.
She added: “I liked the fact that it has not been a shocking swing – they are still recognisable dishes like turkey pie and lasagne. So many parents have taken their children off school dinners – we wanted to show them that they really have improved now.”
School dinner ladies Doreen East and Christine Steele said they were also happy with the new menus.
Ms Steele, who has worked at the school for six years, said: “A lot of the foods before were processed like frozen pizzas and chicken burgers. Now we are cooking everything, even the pizzas.”
