Hidden water
supply will keep parks green all summer
PARKS in Camden have a reserve supply of water to ensure
they stay green no matter how hot the summer.
The water has been tapped by drilling a giant bore-hole during
the Swiss Cottage redevelopment.
It will be drawn on if water suppliers extend the current domestic
ban on hosepipes to local authorities.
The supply crisis has not reached that stage yet and the parks
departments was still using sprinkler systems this week.
The new bore-hole runs more than 100 metres underground to collect
water that gathers naturally. Ironically, extra water is amassing
below ground due to leaking Victorian pipes, currently being
replaced by Thames Water.
A council spokesman confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) that the
new supply at Swiss Cottage was exclusively for Camden.
He said: “It’s our bore-hole and there is a 10-year
supply of water, approximately. At the moment the hosepipe ban
is only for domestic use but if that changes then we can use
water from the bore-hole.”
The Town Hall said it did not have a policy on sharing the water
but would pass supplies onto hospitals in an emergency. A press
official added: “If someone comes to us and says they are
in desperate need of water and it is an emergency, we are not
going to turn them away. Of course, we don’t know how it
is going to work out. It might rain more and we might not need
it.”
The Royal Parks Agency plans to drill a 130-metre bore-hole
in Regent’s Park to provide water to keep it looking green. |
