Letters to the Editor

Parks are for peace, not amplified music

• WHEN places such as Hampstead Heath and the Kenwood estate were saved for the public, they were never meant to be abused as happens each summer (Kenwood concerts: “They’re just noise pollution”, April 6).
Noise from the concerts at Kenwood pervades large areas of the Heath and Warren Mitchell warns of yet another summer of music madness. Annual objections are ignored by English Heritage, manager of Kenwood. Perhaps a source of funding for upkeep (apart from public tax) would be to charge for visiting Kenwood House during the summer months.
There has been much in the media recently about the misuse of public spaces and parks.
Sadly the people in charge forget the purpose they were created for – public relaxation and exercise.
Doing nothing but sitting is creative too. Camden’s smaller spaces such as Harrington Square are well catered for, and hopefully the borough councillors will drop any proposal to hire off parts of Lincoln’s Inn Fields for corporate events (Parties in park vetoed by Lords, April 6).
The only music heard within parks should be from brass bands tootling away the summer afternoons – those who want mega-amplification and mass audiences have covered places to visit – such as the nearly completed Wembley Stadium.
Perhaps the City Corporation should take out an injunction against English Heritage, to curtail the unnecessary invasion of noise? As the Bard said, “summer’s term hath all too short a lease”, so let’s enjoy it naturally and quietly.
