New name call for Theatre Museum

ACTORS and theatre lovers used the 2006 Theatre Book Prize ceremony to call for the Victoria and Albert Museum to save the Theatre Museum – and consider changing its name to Theatre World to attract new visitors.
The V&A owns the Theatre Museum, and is considering closing it due to cash problems.
Actor Sir Timothy West, currently starring in Alan Bennett’s the Old Country at the Trafalgar Studios, told the gathering at the Theatre Museum on Russell Street, Covent Garden on yesterday (Wednesday) that he did not think the V&A should close the museum but should consider changing the name.
He said: “We (the museum) are not very well served by our title. What is needed is a name that reflects, informs, justifies what we are trying to do.”
The Royal Opera House is understood to be looking at trying to set up a partnership with the V&A to maintain the museum in its current home, and a consultation document is set to be published today (Thursday), but whether a new name is being considered is not yet known.
