Go Green this election day
Each week in the run-up to the May 4 council elections the
New Journal will be offering parties a platform to put their
case to voters. This week: Sian Berry (pictured) of The Green
Party.
You can help elect Camden’s first Green Party councillors
on May 4.
Under a fairer voting system, we would already have seven Green
councillors, but Green support has been growing steadily over
the past four years and, even with first-past-the-post, we now
have a real chance of taking seats in several wards. All three
seats in Kentish Town and Highgate are likely to fall to Green
candidates.
Our priorities will be to improve public services, help independent
businesses to thrive, and to make Camden the greenest borough
in London.
We will work to reinstate and improve community facilities,
including public toilets, playgrounds and youth centres.
We can’t just punish the young for spending time on the
streets when they have little else to do. Camden’s huge
number of anti-social behaviour orders (Asbos) is astounding
when leisure facilities are being closed.
We also believe that affordable and secure housing is a right,
oppose the privatisation of council homes and would insist on
50 per cent affordable housing in all new developments.
Local businesses would see action on unfair rents and rates,
and improved parking policies.
Locally owned, independent shops are essential to the economy
and character of our borough, but for years they have been neglected
in favour of supermarkets and big retail developments. Green
councillors would help ensure we don’t end up living in
a clone town.
We would focus on making Camden a flagship green borough that
leads the way on the environment. |
