Leaseholders need to be informed
• It was interesting to read your article about the
Primrose Hill leaseholders being billed by Camden Council between
£6,000 to £9,000 for carrying out unnecessary repairs
to their estate (Nervous wait over bill for homeowners, March
23).
On our estate of Barnfield and Woodfield in the Gospel Oak Ward,
current repair works have just started and is planned to last
until August/September.
Quite a few contentious issues have also arisen. We also have
a case before the Leasehold Valuation Tribunal.
Leaseholders have been told to expect bills of £25,000
as their share of estimated costs. The final charge will probably
be higher.
At the start of every month, the council holds a two-hour update
meeting with the contractor.
This meeting is held on the Barnfield and Woodfield estate,
in the tenants’ hall.
Leaseholders were told they had no rights to know any information
that passes between the council and the contractors at this
meeting.
So leaseholders are denied any knowledge of what is going on
as it is happening.
In Camden, the old council tenant mentality still governs how
the council sees it’s estate residents.
We are the peasants who have to go “cap in hand” and
they are the lords of the land, ruling the manor.
