Don't rob us of the peace of Kenwood
• THANK you New Journal for highlighting once again
another injustice that might otherwise go unchallenged (Kenwood
is not a venue for concerts, March 30).
Juliet Purssell is right to ask for some meaningful consultation
on a matter as important as the erosion of the peace of our
beloved parks – such as Waterlow, with the lovely Kenwood
House and Hampstead Heath. Without them I would have left Camden
years ago.
The creeping demotion of non-moneymaking pursuits in our ever
increasingly commercial
world is typical of some people, who think rights take precedence
over responsibilities.
Incidentally, how refreshing to be able to acknowledge a ‘chairwoman’,
rather than a ‘chair’.
So, may we, who respect the values of the Iveagh Bequest to
provide a place of beauty and peace for all, be consulted before
we are robbed of this invaluable asset.
I am sure that I am not the only one to function better, in
my life and work, for times spent on the Heath. If English Heritage
requires me to pay money for this, I will do so, rather than
watch the noise and visual pollution of the Heath.
Finally, the Camden councillors, who, it seems, have wisely
assessed such amenities in the case of Primrose Hill, might
come to our help, if residents were consulted.

• Kenwood House like all the other stately homes of
England owes its existence to the exploitation of working class
people.
Now those people wish to enjoy the facility with the coming
together of family and friends on limited summer evenings for
musical entertainment, sometimes to the slight inconvenience
of the neighbouring millionaires.
The idea of bringing the stage closer to the audience is an
interesting one and my friends and I look forward to this improvement.
