THE CROW By RICHARD OSLEY & CATHERINE ETOE

Arsenal were great (against nine men)

ANOTHER night struggling to beat West Brom for Spurs, another night beating one of Europe’s best teams for Arsenal. And another night watching the Champions League on TV for Chelsea. Who would have thought it? It turns out you don’t need to spend £400 million on new players, play boring-to-watch long balls, moan loads, handle the ball and dive around a lot to do well in the Champions League.
You just need to play like Arsenal. The Gunners showed the way it’s meant to be done against Juventus – or Grimsby in disguise as people are already calling Vieira’s new team – on Tuesday.
Only the silliest Tottenham fans, most jealous Chelsea supporters and that simpleton West Ham manager Alan Pardew will deny Arsenal have been outstanding in Europe. Instead of offering congratulations, Pardew, who has won nothing, says that Arsenal should be fielding more English players.
If only – if only – Arsenal hadn’t have lost out in those tense bidding wars for Bobby Zamora, Matt Etherington and Paul Konchesky. Then
they might have scored three.

WELL that settles that then. Arsenal aren’t pants this season because Patrick Vieira left. They’d be rubbish with him judging by the way he let bandy legged pensioner Pires nick the ball off him on Tuesday.
I’d hate to take anything away from the fact that Arsenal impressively beat a team of nine who had played just a couple of days before while they had enjoyed a lovely rest after their rain dance at Portsmouth.
But to be honest, Paddy and his new team Notts County, sorry the Old Lady of Juventus, look in dire need of a couple of Sanatogen and a rejuvenating Saga holiday.
In fact, I’ve seen my Gran and her bingo chums pass biscuits around the room with more zip than Vieira and his no-name buddies passed the ball at Highbury.
“A sports car taking on a saloon car,” bleated Clive Tyldesley as Henry ran past the likes of that wally with the pony tail.
More like a go-cart taking on a Noddy car if you ask me.

• Mr Osley, there you go again having a go at my team Chelsea, (Crow, March 23). How bad your memory must be about your beloved Arsenal. They react to defeat with such grace do they? Well let’s face it, they have had enough practice this season!
What you would give to be in Chelsea’s position in the Premiership and the FA Cup – still what is a 25 point gap in points between such great friends?
