Residents say the bins are an eyesore
These new bins are just plain rubbish

OUTSIZE rubbish bins installed in a Highgate conservation area are causing a stink with residents.
The plastic green bins, designed for commercial waste, were placed in the Holly Lodge conservation area – a collection of private homes and council flats in Highgate dating back to Victorian times – just before Christmas.
According to the Town Hall, the new bins were needed to replace the old system of storing rubbish in bin liners hung up in old-fashioned refuse rooms which staff said were attracting rats.
But furious residents say the green bins are an eyesore – and too heavy for domestic use.
John Gatenby, chairman of the Holly Lodge Conservation Area Advisory Committee (HCCAAC) said: “The old bins were discreetly hidden and the system worked perfectly well for decades. They may have been a bit decrepit but that could have been rectified.
“Instead they have come up with this solution which is undermining the conservation area and causing considerable inconvenience to residents.
Environment supremo Labour councillor John Thane, who visited the estate last Tuesday with fellow ward councillor Maggie Cosin to discuss the situation, told residents the new bins were a “temporary solution”.
He added: “I would have assumed that consultation had taken place. What’s clear is that there needs to be a meeting with residents to come up with a solution. I can see that it’s not ideal but I don’t think the old system was working as well as it should have been .”
A Town Hall press official said: “The bins are the same one we use on other estates across the borough. Since the bins were installed we’ve since met the Holly Lodge Estates Committee to look at their concerns and explain we are planning to build enclosures to keep the bins out of sight.
