Son charged with mother’s murder

THE son of a “perfect mother” found dead in her home on Thursday morning has been charged with her murder.
Maria Wright, 71, was discovered by police in her house in Harmood Street, Chalk Farm. She has been described by friends as an attractive, cheerful woman who “looked 15 years younger”.
Her son Amato Charles Wright, 37, lived with her in the family home where he and his two sisters, Elizabeth and Anna, now both living outside London, were brought up.
Mrs Wright came to England from Naples, in Italy, after World War II, and lived in her Kentish Town house for more than 30 years. A post mortem to establish the cause of death was continuing yesterday (Wednesday).
Neighbours described Mrs Wright, who worked in the ladies wear department at John Lewis, Oxford Street, for more than 25 years before retiring in 2001, as a “lovely, jolly little lady” who enjoyed gardening and gambling.
Esther Whitby, 71, a neighbour who knew her for 30 years, said: “She was very respectable, she always looked very well turned out. Her house was spick and span, and she used to grow unusual things in her garden that you wouldn’t expect to see in England – like her Cyprus tree.”
A nearby neighbour, who has lived with his wife on Harmood Street for 30 years, remembered the Wright family as “lovely people” and spoke of her as “a quiet, beautiful lady”.
Phil Christie, who works for Virgin Records, has lived next door to Mrs Wright for three years. He said: “When we moved in we had nothing for our kitchen – and she lent us lots of kitchen equipment, cutlery and so on. And when you saw her she would always ask you in for a cup of tea and a chat.”
One friend said: “I’m so shocked. She was full of life and loved her kids. She was so pleased when her grandchild was born.”
n Mr Wright appeared at Highbury magistrates Court on Saturday and has been remanded in custody. He is due to appear at the Old Bailey in June.
