Letters to the Editor

Misguided on housing

• A couple of weeks ago I sent a letter to John Prescott demanding to know why the government was sitting on £283 million which had been earmarked for improving council housing in Camden.
I have received an extraordinary reply from his department. It admitted that the money was needed and that without it Camden’s homes would not approach the “decent” standard set by the government but said that the money had been withheld because “funding should be limited to local authorities who have separated their management and strategic functions”.
In other words improvements to Camden’s estates have been left massively underfunded because the Labour government doesn’t trust the Labour council to spend the money wisely.
Maybe they’d trust the Liberal Democrats more – at least a Lib Dem council wouldn’t remain muted in their opposition while the government sacrifices tenants well-being on a point of misguided principle.
