Wenger: I know what it's like to be captain

Arsenal boss says Thierry Henry is fitting into new role

ARSENE Wenger has used his own experience as captain of a 1966 Austrian club to understand Thierry Henry’s struggle to adapt to the role.

The Arsenal manager believes Henry is only just beginning to take on his full responsibilities as captain.
But after his skipper led Arsenal to a 4-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday, Wenger said he understood Henry’s plight by looking to lessons he had learnt as captain of Austrian third division club Mutzig.
He said: “I know what it’s like because I was captain as well.
“It takes time to understand football completely, you do not get that from one game to the next.
“Thierry is beginning to show this character and the team has unity again.”
Wenger made Henry captain after selling Patrick Vieira to Italian giants Juventus in July 2005.
But while Henry – top scorer in the last five seasons – regularly puts in match-winning displays, he has faced criticism after lacklustre away performances.
Wenger added: “At the start Thierry wanted to do too much – he wanted to help everybody.
“Now he is conscious of the problems of the whole team.”
Meanwhile, Spurs head coach Martin Jol will be looking for a team performance when Tottenham travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Jol said: “If you fall behind, you then have a struggle because Chelsea are great at counter-attacking.
“But we have our own strengths and Chelsea know that we can win games.”
