John Alderton and Pauline Collins at the Town Hall
Actors block plans for house

FILM star Pauline Collins has defeated plans for a ‘Footballers’ Wives-style’ house next door to her home in a Hampstead conservation area.
Ms Collins, who appeared in Shirley Valentine, and actor husband John Alderton told a packed planning meeting on Thursday that proposals for the new home on the site of a two-storey 1960s house at 14a Redington Road were of poor quality and would invade their privacy.
Mr Alderton said: “One of the problems is the size and bulk. The rear elevation is four storeys and it means the top storey at the back will look directly into our bedroom.
“The other problem is from the front. Ours is a listed house that has certain rights and protections. What we will see when we look out is the side elevation and we are going to have to look at that brick wall for the next 125 years.”
Planning permission has already been given for a similar development at number 14, next to the proposed new home.
Mr Alderton added: “The design should be of a higher quality than a historical pastiche.”
But Andy Meader, planning consultant for applicant Jeremy Sokel, said: “Great consideration has been given to producing these designs. They are sympathetic to the surroundings and reflective of nearby buildings and contribute to the character of the conservation area.”
Mr Sokel said he would appeal against the decision.
