BIG MATCH SPECIAL by DEAN TURNER

Dan stars in a thriller

Hampstead 2, FDS 2

FUTEBOL De Salao came back from behind against Hampstead to make sure spoils and trophies were shared in this week’s Camden New Journal and Islington Tribune Big Match Special.
These Under-12 pace setters have a reputation for playing a brand of football that is quick and incisive and Monday night’s tense game brought out the best in both sets of players.
The skills were soon on show when Hampstead’s Jake Gottlieb danced down the left flank and rolled the ball to Jack Moroney whose firm shot was blocked by FDS skipper Daniel Fergus. Terrence Carter and Tocin Akande then combined to create an opening for FDS but Carter’s effort slid wide.
FDS withstood an early onslaught from Hampstead but were undone when Andre Stephenson capitalised on a defensive mix-up to poke the ball past the keeper.
He was also involved in the sweeping move that lead to Hampstead’s second.
Moroney swung the ball across to Stephenson who used his strength to hold off a defender and set the ball up for Charlie Ball to smash a first time strike into the bottom corner.
The goal sparked FDS into life and they pulled one back before half-time after a lightning quick counter attack.
Carter picked the ball up and led the charge forward supported by Ankande.
The pair exchanged passes twice before Carter let fly with his left foot and the ball rebounded in off the base of the post.
FDS keeper Finlay Williams had to be alert to push Gottlieb’s shot away for a corner and his skipper was in the right place to block a goal bound effort from Aran McCarthy.
Fergus then foiled another Hampstead attack and raced forward in search of an equaliser, after side-stepping two challenges he set up Ankande who turned away from his marker and blasted the ball beyond the grasp of Sebastian Culligan to complete the comeback.

Man of the Match: Daniel Fergus

The FDS captain typified the spirit of his team, blocking everything that was thrown at him and then setting up the equaliser to earn a point. against Hamps
