Wanted: designs for mall revamp

A DESIGN competition is being launched this week to find fresh ideas for the redevelopment of Archway’s run-down mall.
Residents are being asked to submit ideas that will transform the bleak, windswept mall, with its closed-down shops and 16-storey tower block.
The competition is being run by the Better Archway Forum (BAF), a community group with members in Camden and Islington. It is unhappy with the work produced so far by professionals at Islington Council, which plans to redevelop the area. BAF hopes to draw on the talents of local architects and urban designers. The winning ideas from the competition will be integrated into a community-based master plan.
There are two categories in the competition – under-16s and over-16s – and submissions can be written or drawn on no more than four sheets of A1 paper or presented in the form of a model.
Prizewinners in each category will receive £100, with a runners-up prize of £50.
BAF is working in conjunction with the architecture department of London Metropolitan University in Holloway, Simon Kaufman, of Terry Farrell and Partners, Space Syntax, Meadowcraft Griffin and Arcadiam Associates.
BAF chairwoman Kate Calvert said: “What we want to see from the competition are key thoughts which could make a difference. We aren’t necessarily looking for fully-worked-up schemes. The winner might have an overlooked detail, which could prove the tipping point for a scheme, or the outline for a new approach which isn’t yet in the mainstream.”
Submissions should be sent to Archway Design Competition, Hargrave Park School, Hargrave Park N19 5NH. Entries can be delivered personally between 8.30am and 5pm. Entries must be received at the school no later than 5pm on Thursday, March 23.
