Here's to great new park life

• Two meetings took place last week to discuss the Cantelowes Gardens development and in particular the design of the pavilion and the provision of catering facilities for the park’s users.
Councillor Gerry Harrison, officers and representatives of the Friends of Cantelowes Gardens met and discussed some modifications that will make the sports pavilion more pleasing to the eye.
The Friends of Cantelowes Gardens were advised at their meeting that the council still has an open mind about approving a café, though any proposal will have to be financially viable and backed by a sustainable business plan. The council has received an application from a contractor with a mobile café who serves healthy food and who has a proven track.
It was felt generally that if such a facility were to be available and good usage could be demonstrated then in due course a more permanent provision could be provided based upon a sound business case and considered as a part of the Cantelowes Gardens management plan.
We are looking forward to the brilliant new facilities that the park will provide to people shortly.

• I am writing in response to a letter concerning Cantelowes Gardens (Give Us Return For Loss Of Park, February 2).
I’m sorry if the writer feels her views on the redesign of Cantelowes weren’t taken into account. Camden Council consulted people extensively. Both the Friends Of Cantelowes Gardens, and skateboarders in the Cantelocals group were involved in the selection of the landscape architect and drafting the design brief.
A shelter was not included after fears were raised during the consultation that it could encourage anti-social behaviour. Unfortunately, funds did not run to a café, so the council is trying to arrange for a mobile catering facility.
Cantelowes is specifically designed to cater to the needs of young people in the borough, featuring a skateboard park, multi use games area and children’s play facilities.
Camden Council has to consider the needs of the whole community with its parks and open spaces and there are already other options nearby where people can go if they want something different.
More than £7 million in council and Heritage Lottery funding has been invested in improving Camden’s parks and open spaces over the last eight years.
