Mob killing suspects freed on bail

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of Swiss Cottage teenager Mahir Osman have ruled out charging anyone for at least two months, just a week after the borough commander said he was confident a murder case would be brought.
The last eight of two dozen teenagers arrested within minutes of 18-year-old Mahir’s killing a week ago on Saturday will be interviewed and bailed until April, a police spokesman said.
Eight youths were interviewed and bailed on Tuesday, with a further eight interviewed and bailed yesterday (Wednesday).
The decision means nobody will be charged for at least two months.
CCTV cameras are understood to have captured the knife attack in Camden High Street in full.
Borough Commander Mark Heath last week said he expected “a range of charges from affray to murder” to be brought eventually but that police would not risk convictions by rushing their investigation.
But detectives, who continued to make door-to-door enquiries this week, are understood to have concerns that suspects could disappear before charges are brought. Between five and seven youths evaded arrest at the scene by smashing a window on the top deck of the bus and jumping out.
Last week the Osman family complained to Home Secretary Charles Clarke that the suspects should have been charged sooner.
Mahir’s brother, Faisal, was last week reported to have made a complaint to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) about the handling of the police investigation. He was reported to have said police invited him for a counselling session which turned into a three-hour grilling by detectives at Holborn Police Station.
A spokesman for the IPCC yesterday (Wednesday) said that no complaint had been received.

• Police have confirmed that a second man was injured in the attack on Mr Osman, but did not need hospital treatment.
