What's On
THE latest venue to provide facilities for jazz musicians to jam together is Map Café, the Kentish Town outlet at 46 Grafton Road on the junction with Inkerman Road.
Its jam session, Jazz Ensemble, will be taking place every Sunday afternoon from 1-6pm.
Jazz standards will be the order of the day – Monk, Ellington, Davis and their ilk, not any avant garde stuff. The venue is often frequented by some of Kentish Town’s premier jazz musicians such as pianist Dorian Ford, tenor sax player Bucky Leo and drummer Milo Fell.
There are some great gigs coming up for jazz enthusiasts.
On Monday, the Con Bar in St Pancras will host a rhythmic performance by three young players, drummer Shaney Forbes, percussionist Hammadi Valdes and guitarist Dave Preston.
On Tuesday, “The Two Johns,” pianist John Horler and quitarist John Etheridge play at Ivy House in New North Road and trumpeter Henry Amburg Jennings is at Coltrane’s in Chapel Market, Islington.
Upcoming classical music offerings are plentiful, too.
Tomorrow (Friday) in Hampstead, there’s An Evening with Opera performed by award-winning singers at Rosslyn Hill Chapel and Schubert’s Winterreise sung by Christian Fellner at Burgh House.
Saturday evening has a treat for early music fans at St George’s Bloomsbury where the Renaissance Singers will perform 16th-century music from the north Italian court of the Gonzagas.
Sunday evening’s chamber concert at Conway Hall will be given by the young Adoch Piano Quartet and the Monday lunchtime concert at Wigmore Hall by the fabulous Christine Brewer singing Strauss songs.
