The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB
Published: 26 November 2009

I SPENT almost every night last week at Islington’s glorious Union Chapel, avoiding the double misery of seeing the World Cup hopes of both my teams – Ireland and Egypt – smashed to smithereens.
There are no words of consolation for fellow Irish-Egyptians, just a word of thanks to Mencap’s Little Noise Sessions for softening the blow.

• THIS week’s page features some of Islington’s best venues – the Union Chapel, The Old Queen’s Head and The Lexington. If you live in Camden or Westminster and haven’t yet managed to stray across the border, this is for you!
l Whether for her new orange hair, onstage stripping, clothing line or the lastest horrific spangly stretchy number, Beth Ditto’s in the headlines more for her sense of style than her music. To remember why she first came to our attention, Gossip play The Forum, Kentish Town on November 28.

• ALSO at The Forum, The Strokes’ beautiful frontman Julian Casablancas’ solo dates are in high demand. December 15 is already sold out but there’s still space on December 16.
l Here’s a strange one – a full live band will recreate DJ Shadow’s influential album Entroducing at the Jazz Café on December 3. Brings back memories of shisha-smoking uni days...

• DJ Ewen Mackintosh (The Office’s Keith) plays his favourite pop, dance, britpop and indie tunes at I Love The 90s, Islington’s 02 Academy, (December 4 and 11).
See www.o2academy If Madonna’s more your scene, I Love The 80s is every Saturday at the Jazz Cafe, Camden – from 10.30pm to 3.30am.
