The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB
Published: 5 November 2009

Coming up/review

FANS Andrew Bird know he is guaranteed to put on a good show. During the multi-instrumentalist’s decade-long career he has built up a reputation for his spectacular performance technique, using “looping” with violin, guitar, mandolin, glockenspiel and singing parts along with his signature whistling and clapping.
On Tuesday, the Chicago-born musician will bring his trademark show to Islington’s Union Chapel.
Support act Moriarty also promise to entertain with theatrical performances that float between folk, blues, country and cabaret.
JOSIE HINTON

HEARING hundreds in the sold-out Islington O2 Academy sing along to Adriana Calcanhotto, you understand what Brazil is all about – “saudade” (the eternal longing for something lost). Calcanhotto, one of the country’s most respected voices, teamed up with percussionist Domenico Lancellotti and Moreno Veloso. Funkily experimental, the trio used the munching of apples as rhythmic elements and reinterpreted Madonna’s Music on double basses. Suave, but maybe not quite right for a Friday night.
