REVIEW: CAI-MARLE GARCIA
The Green Note

CAN the electric bass guitar be pulled out of the rhythm section and turned into a lead instrument in its own right?
Most will think not. But young Gospel Oak bassist, bandleader and composer Cai Marle-Garcia thinks it can.
“I believe the bass guitar can be made to sing in a way that’s not often been tried before,” he says.
“It can have a role as the leader, not just as a member of the rhythm section allowed to have the brief solo every now and then.”
His jazz-fusion approach was put on display when his new trio performed at the Green Note at the top of Parkway in Camden Town.
Other members of the trio are scintillating guitarist Sagat Guirey and percussionist Stuart Semple.
Some of the numbers, mostly Cai’s own compositions, were remarkably successful in putting some real feeling into a strong melodic line. It’s not Schubert, of course. But, in time, it could develop into something exceptional.
Cai went to Haverstock School where his music teacher was Steve Kite – and Steve is on his student’s new album. “I now teach bass at Haverstock once a week,” says Cai.
After leaving school, he attended WAC in Belsize Park which has been so successful in grooming young jazz players, both at its present home and previously at Talacre.
Cai’s debut album Mr Ears, which includes pieces composed during a trip to Australia last year, is now available. The launch party for the CD will be held at Charlie Wright’s on Pitfield Street, Hoxton, N1, on December 17.
