Jazz on the Map

PREVIEW: DORIAN FORD TRIO
Map Café

A NEW format for playing jazz is to be explored later this month by pianist Dorian Ford and his trio at the Map Café on Grafton Way, Kentish Town.
The trio will take up a five-day residency, starting on October 14, to play the music of Bill Evans, the US pianist-composer noted for the unique sound world he created during the hey-day of US jazz in the 1960s and 1970s.
“Sometimes, the most beautiful and genuine musical moments can happen in simple, unpretentious local places,” says Dorian Ford. “For me, that’s Map Café. It’s the sort of place a small group of people can simply come together and get into something real.
“This kind of music-making for several days on the trot is really only available to star players in London. So the idea of the Map residency is to take the pressure off the one-night stand situation. We’re going to try to replicate the kind of legendary residencies of such artists as John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk and Ahmad Jamal in small New York clubs, like the Village Vanguard and The Five Spot.
“Map has such a great atmosphere and community feeling. It’s run by local people for local people and we think it will great for us and for Bill Evans.”
Certainly, Dorian Ford counts as one of the Kentish Town people. He was born and brought up in the area, went to Rhyl Street primary school, then to Acland Burley and was fortunate to attend Ian Carr’s weekly classes at WAC, Talacre.
Dorian Ford Trio is at the Map Café, 46 Grafton Road, Kentish Town, NW5,
from October 14-18. 020 7485 0077, 8pm,£5
