The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB

Grooves

MOST people featured on this page are under 30 – with the odd exception. And this is one of those weeks. Sometimes it’s too easy to get caught up in the buzz of promoters touting the next coolest band in the world. So speaking to Gordon Giltrap was an education, a reminder of what it’s supposed to be about – the art of the instrument. Though what do I know? I gave up playing flute at 12 because I was scared of my teacher’s blind dog.
l The Arctic Monkeys released new single Crying Lightning on Monday on limited edition vinyl via selected Oxfam branches. My spies at the Kentish Town branch tell me the stunt went off like a damp squib, with interest almost as limited as the number of editions on sale. Looks like the boys have subverted the publicity machine so much it’s backfired – but it was all for charity.
l Twitter’s all abuzz with the 02 Academy Islington’s latest line-up. There’s much talk about The Hold Steady on September 12, while Lethal Bizzle on October 12 is promising big things.
l The Roundhouse has gone all experimental. First there was ex-Talking Heads’ David Byrne’s installation where visitors “play the building” via a battered old organ wired to the rafters (plays to the end of the month). Then on September 12 there’s Jem Finer’s Longplayer Live – a 1,000-minute excerpt of music devised to play continuously for 1,000 years without repetition. Fair play, they started in December 1999, but can they keep it up? What will the world look like in 1,000 years? How will the compulsion to keep playing be passed on through generations – will anyone still care? What will music be like in the future and will humans still even exist?
