The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB
Published: 6 August 2009

VENUES like The Luminaire and The Lexington have become known for their ability to book edgy up-and-coming bands so it comes as some surprise to see Natalie Imbruglia on the bill for August 12 (Luminaire) and August 19 (Lexington). Good old Beth from Neighbours has made a name for herself in the pop world with songs like Torn but these days she’s more in the headlines for her friendship with Prince Harry. So I wonder, will any Royal offspring be attending either of these gigs?
* I still don’t get the whole celebrity DJ cult. Kate Nash was spinning the decks at The Flowerpot on Saturday night and although she did have some good tunes, it could have been anyone there playing records. What’s wrong with getting the musicians to do what they’re known for?
* I spoke to Matt from Skint and Demoralised at the Noah and the Whale gig last week. He told me he’d just moved to Islington and their new single is out in September. Watch out for these guys – another Sheffield poet making the transition to the indie scene.
* Check out Year Zero at The Relentless Garage in Highbury Corner. Live music this month comes from The Flashguns with DJ sets from Mark Beaumont, Phelim O’Neill and Wolf in the main room, playing only the best indie and electronic music from the previous (and future) 12 months. With Truly Beautiful Disaster taking over the minibar side room. From 10.30pm-4am, £6 after midnight, £5 before.
* Alex Roots plays Camden Barfly next week (August 11). Following support slots with Sugababes, expect sparkling tunes and punk-infused pop from this 16-year-old singer.
