The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB
Published: 30 July 2009

I KNOW I’ve said this before but the first time I saw Charlie Waller from The Rumble Strips, he was electrifying as Mark Ronson’s Electric Proms guest at the Roundhouse. Somehow, he turned out a powerful, raw interpretation of Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, while managing not to let Ronson’s overproduced touch spoil it. So I’ll be checking The Rumble Strips out at the Hawley on Monday to see if they’ve managed to stop Ronson from meddling too much in their new album, which they’ve allowed him to produce.
l I saw Noah and the Whale preview their second album at the Hard Rock Café on Tuesday. It was surreal to see these dour, death-loving sunny folk types surrounded by waitresses passing out burgers and chocolate brownies.
l After a month of being stuffed with bands during the iTunes Festival, the Roundhouse is being transformed into one huge instrument from August 8-31 for Playing the Building. Former Talking Head David Byrne is turning the legendary venue into a musical installation, open to members of the public to come and try out. The “Victorian steam punk” technology will mean you’ll be able to make your own sounds, mainly with the help of a keyboard that turns pipes into flutes and walls into drums.
l Roxanne de Bastion’s an energetic one. After the success of her nights at the Camden Eye, the singer-songwriter’s launching a new monthly night called Nepotism on Saturday, at Camden Rock. Former lead singer of The Hoax, Jon Amor will headline, with Roxanne herself supporting. Doors open at 6.30pm, entrance £3.
