The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB

Grooves

I’M OFF on holiday this week and the one thing I’ll be missing is my iPod.
I no longer like any of the songs on it and I can’t work out how to get rid of them so I’m heading for a week of silence. If I stumble across any breaking talent in Sicily I’ll let you know.

There’s so much happening at Proud these days it’s tough to decide what to see.
My picks are: Example (June 24) – the south London rapper’s been signed to Mike Skinner, now with Ministry of Sound and just off tour with Calvin Harris – one to watch; James Rhodes (July 13) – He’s a classical music pianist with a rock star attitude. If the cool kids won’t go to the Philharmonic, why not bring the Philharmonic to them? But how will Chopin, Bach and Beethoven go down in the heart of Stables Market? And if you think you can compete, there’s always La Matinee (June 28). Proud will be kitted out with a new runway, young designers will be showcasing their skills and aspiring models will be pouting for the talent-spotters. All this to the backdrop of jazz from Beautiful Things.

Tommy Reilly, the awkward Scottish winner of Orange Act Unsigned, had to postpone his King’s College gig until June 17.
He’s a bashful, unassuming young man who writes songs about girls never choosing him. Now he’s so popular that his recording commitments are messing with his live dates. And to think a year ago he was busking in the streets at the drop of a hat. If you do get the chance to see this one, let’s hope his raw side hasn’t been polished away.
